LIT 102 Reflection #2 (28th-29th September)

During this week of LIT 102, we learnt much about writing. To begin with, we were  reminded of the importance of teaching students how to write. And in order for us to teach students how to write, we must first know how to write. In other words, the writing success of our students depend on our writing abilities.
Furthermore, apart from using approach or format to teach writing, we are now aware that students need to get actively involved in the learning process. Allowing them the opportunity to do things such as choosing the topics they want to write about can significantly improve writing skills. They are able to write on things that interest them, they write more and are more engaged in the topic. They have the chance to express themselves more freely and personally. Nevertheless, as the teacher, this does not mean coming into the classroom and say take out a book and write. Rather, it means allowing them the opportunity to write on a topic of their choice based on a specific genre they learnt.
In addition we learnt that teachers have to talk through what they are doing as they write. When teaching writing teachers must model to students how to write in all genres as this gives way to students understanding and development. They are able to see the thought process that is involved when writing as the teacher models it to them. All in all, we learnt that writing is a process, therefore it must be taught and not just given to students without explaining HOW.
More so, we learnt no matter the approach we use in the teaching of writing, children will always need time to write. The more practice they get the stronger/better their writing becomes. In addition to that, we learnt that interaction enables students to understand what it means to write for an audience. It was said that when students shared their writing or talk about what they wrote, their writing improves.
Moreover, we liked the way questions were asked at the end of every slide. The question that was most appealing to us was the one which asked “ do you think you know enough to teach writing?” We must say that question had us thinking and planning. We realized we are not that competent in our writing, therefore we decided to use the information presented in this session to improve our writing so we can then help our students become competent writers. As prospective teachers we would allow our students to get engaged in their writing as much as possible so that they would not see it monotonous, rather fun and a form of self-expression. In addition, this session has opened our eyes to some best practices that would help us in becoming effective teachers.
Equally important, it was reinforced to us that students go through stages of writing development, which are the Random letter stage, Phonemic stage, Transitional stage, conventional stage and the Proficient stage.. As prospective teachers, we need to know the stages of writing development so that we would know what to expect from students at the various stages and how instructions should be given at all stages to enhance students writing.

Furthermore, we were exposed to The Six Traits of Writing, which is a way of teaching writing to students. It was always emphasized to us that writing should be taught as a process and not a product, hence, this is where the Six Traits Plus one of writing comes in. It instruct teachers as to what they should teach in the writing process.
To begin with, we would teach our students about ideas. Students would learn that when writing they have to incorporate details that are interesting, important and informative. Their ideas would have to be strong to provide clarity and relevance to the topic. Likewise, our students would be aware that they have to organise their ideas in sequence to fit the central idea. They would learn about topic sentences and the need for supporting details so that their writing would be strong and meaningful to readers. In the same fashion, our students would learn about voice. Voice is the heart and soul of the writing, therefore the writer needs to develop his or her own distinct voice.
Additionally, there is another trait called word choice. This would allow students to select precise language and words that give their writing flavour and richness to readers. Equally important, students must understand that writing must have sentence fluency. This means sentences must have rhythm and flow logically into each other. Furthermore, students need to know that their are mechanical correctness to writing. We would teach them about spelling, punctuation, grammar/usage, capitalization and paragraphing so that they would write for understanding. Finally, after students have employ these six traits and re-read their work, they would have to present it to an audience.
As prospective teachers, not only would we introduce our students to the six traits of writing but we would also employ it when we write. We liked that these writing strategies are unambiguous and can help us create strong, meaningful writing.
In conclude, this week was rather an interesting and meaningful one. However for future sessions, we suggest that we get ourselves prepared by reading the slide and get familiar with the information before class. By doing this, we would have an idea of what we are going to learn about and have questions ready to ask for clarification. Additionally, as a class we tend to go off on a tangent from the lecture and this can result in waste of instructional time. For future sessions, we suggest that we stay as focused as possible on the lesson so that we would cover more information and have time for short assessments. Furthermore, we would like the lecturer to provide questions that would allow us to think critically about the information provided in class, and little activities to challenge us.

LIT 102 Reflection #1

26th September, 2017

Image result for writers workshop

LIT 102 is a course designed to help teachers understand how they can use writing strategies and activities to help students improve on their writing. In this week’s class we learnt about the Writer’s workshop, which is one of the strategies used to help improve students' writing skills. This strategy consist of four parts: focus lesson, writing, conferencing, and sharing time. We also learnt that different levels of the writing process should/could be integrated at the different stages of the writer’s workshop.
After we learnt the information, we were expected to choose a level from the Writer’s workshop and integrate it with one of the stages in the Writing process and show how we would help students at that level to improve their writing. Most of the presentations were well done. We liked the way our colleagues presented their information. They were engaging.
What stood out for us were the creativeness in which the information was delivered. For the Author’s chair, the chair was decorated, and the author was wearing a crown while reading their piece. The facial expressions of the readers show that they were very excited with this venture. Also, the Editing marks chart was quite informational and it added to the increase level of participation in the presentation.
However, we thought that more could have been done, for this was evident in one of the presentations. There was evidence of poor or lack of planning. Nevertheless, there are some suggestions that we think, if employ, will make presentations more meaningful. We think that making sure that we understand the materials and instructions prior to presentations will aid in proper planning. We also think that if all groups were presenting on the same topic at the different levels of the Writer’s workshop, it would have caused us to make better connection with the material.
We think that as teacher trainees we can use these same approaches in the classroom when teaching writing, especially the Author’s chair and the Editing marks chart. The Author’s chair can be used as a motivational strategy. Psychologist Skinner  said that when students are motivated they get the task done. And, the editing marks chart can be used as a continuous guide in the classroom for the students when they are writing. They can use this chart to edit their writing.

"BLOGS" to the rescue

"Blogs" in Vincy's classrooms

A blog is a frequently updated online personal journal or diary. It is a place to express yourself to the world. A place to share your thoughts and your passions.
Blogging has made its way into education and enhances the way teachers teach and students learn. In St.Vincent and the Grenadines blogging can have a positive impact on education. Socially introvert students now have an opportunity to express themselves is a strong enough reason of how blogs can be used to enhance teaching and learning, but there are a number of other reasons to the learning process.

1. can be used to increase students interaction

With the increase in technological tools entering the education, blogs are another way of fostering collaboration among students. Students are able to post their thoughts and share views whether it be an assignment or a concern about course's materials. Teachers can give students materials to read and ask them to post what they read about. Students can also comments on each others post. As they interact with each others, they have the opportunity to see things from each others perspective. Teachers can have an idea of how students are thinking, therefore she can plan her lessons to teach according.

2. Blog can be used to improve students' skills

In St.Vincent and the Grenadines many of our students struggle with the Standard English due to the fact that it is not their first language. With the use of blogs, students have an opportunity to improve their writing, analysis and critical skills as well as their digital literacy. These post are viewed by the public which would cause them to be more attentive to the quality of work they produce. They would research when necessary and seek help in order to improve their writing and grammar consequently becoming better writers. Students can use blogs to reflect on their class lecturers or a piece of material they were asked to read. This would strengthen students' knowledge.

3. Gives Students a voice

A benefit of blogs in the teaching and learning process is that students have a chance to express themselves. They are able to share ideas to other class mates and even persons in the wider world. While blogging students have an audience in which they can communicate how they feel about situation and also learn from others. Those who are shy in class and do not communicate much with persons face-to-face is given an opportunity through the use of blogs to share their passions. Students can learn how to tolerate each other and respect each other views since everyone is different and will view situations from different perspectives.

4. Can be use for all subject areas

Blogging can be used across the curriculum. It can be used in science, mathematics, social studies, language arts and even all the subjects at the secondary level. Teachers from various subject areas can post questions, whether to stimulate thinking or for assessment purposes. Therefore giving the students the chance to respond. Through blogging teacher and students establish a home- school connection.

5. Student can blog with persons from all over the world

Blogging is not limited to the students and teacher circle. As you post persons from all over the world can comment under your post and share their view point. Students in return gets to learn more and any misconception can be clarified.

According to Ferdig and Trammell (2004) the four main pedagogical benefits of blogging for students:
1. It assists students to become subject matter experts, as they scour and filter through web content searching for relevant information for their posts.
2. It increases student interest in and ownership of learning.
3. It gives students legitimate chances to participate in a dialogue outside of the classroom, and enculturates them into a community of practice.
4. It provides opportunities to share diverse perspectives.

Technology is impacting education everyday. With an electronic device and internet connection, blogs can improve the quality of teaching and learning in education. Students are becoming more advanced in the use of technology and blogging is another interface that can impact the learning process.

" I now pronounce you MAN and WOMAN "- actually means a MAN and a WOMAN.

Should same sex "marriage" be legalized in St.Vincent and the Grenadines? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

The argument of same sex marriage continues to be a well debated matter that leaves St.Vincent and the Grenadines searching for answers. While it is currently illegal to be married to a person of the same sex in St.Vincent and the Grenadines, the issue has stirred up many persons to share their views, some even taking it to the social media.
 http://www.iwnsvg.com/2013/10/16/being-gay-is-not-a-choice/ .
Nevertheless, I stand against same sex "marriage". I am not one to discriminate, and in no way is posting to be little or condemn anyone, however I consider same sex "marriage" to be wrong for these reasons:

Not God's will

Same sex "marriage" is not God's plan for humanity. Marriage was established by God for a man and a woman; the first couple being Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve as we read in the book of Genesis "God created man in His image; in the Divine image he created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them, saying: ‘Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.’” (Gen. 1:28-29). If God ordained marriage for a man and a woman, how then should we go against His words and legalize same sex "marriage"? Additionally persons of the same sex cannot make children. It takes a man's sperm and a woman's egg for a child to be conceived. Therefore how else can we be fertile and multiple if not between both a MAN and a WOMAN.

Furthermore, Jesus Christ taught us “From the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother; and shall cleave to his wife.” (Mark 10:6-7). This clearly states man and wife, not man and husband or woman and wife.
We also learn from Genesis how God punish Sodom and Gomorrah for the sin of homosexuality: “The Lord rained down sulphurous fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah. He overthrew those cities and the whole Plain, together with the inhabitants of the cities and the produce of the soil.” (Gen. 19:24-25)

At all times a child is either denied a father or a mother

It is always best for children to be raised by the influence of both father and mother. consequently when this is not the case, there are many difficulties faced by children who are raised by a single parent, a relative or a foster parent.

Additionally, the situation is the same for the children of a same sex "marriage". Children of the same sex marriage will always lack the benefit of either his/her natural mother or father. Same sex marriage is not in the best interest of the child. He/she will always be deprived of either a mother or a father role model and will be raised by one party who is not even related to them by blood.
